Towel is a fairly basic program to play audio files. It works as a front-end to GStreamer to play both MP3 and Ogg Vorbis files. It runs on GNU/Linux and FreeBSD, using gtkmm 2.4.x, the C++ bindings for GTK+ 2.4.x. Towel is distributed under the GNU General Public Licence version 2.0.

Authors

Towel is written by two people. They are:

Jonathan Irwin

Responsible for the code interfacing with GStreamer, FreeBSD portability, filetype recognition and a lot of other back-end functions vital to making the player work correctly and reliably. Jonathan also does anything involving CVS more complicated than a commit.

Matt Walton

A C++/Perl software engineer with an irrational dislike of XMMS, an obsession with attempting to write everything in Haskell, and a great hatred of Java. Responsible for most of the GUI code, the playlist, this website and the 'bright idea' of porting to gtkmm-1.3 before the API had even stabilised. And then he did it again with gtkmm-2.3.

Towel?

Towel is named as it is in memory of Douglas Adams, author of many great works including The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, who died suddenly on the eleventh of May, 2001.

"Towel" also seemed like a good name for something which has absolutely nothing to do with towels.
